Just doing this now to pass the time in the airport.
- Favorite song- Impossible question to answer. It depends on my mood. Summertime, The Ocean, Ready and Waiting to Fall, The Fisherman Song, Communication are all candidates. But Communication would usually win.
- Favorite album/EP- The Everglow! Closely followed by (M)(a)(e) together.
- Favorite lyrics- “the clouds are waves”
- Favorite photo- I don’t look at many photos, but the everglow album art is probably it.
- Favorite photo/video of them in a concert- umm, the dvd?
- Favorite music video- same answer
- Favorite band member- That’s rough, it’s gotta be between dave and jacob since they seem to be most of the inspiration.
- Favorite quote a band member said- dunno
- Favorite solo photo of any band member- photos? it’s about the music!
- Favorite song from Destination: Beautiful- Summertime
- Favorite song from The Everglow- Ready and Waiting to Fall
- Favorite song from Singularity- Just Let Go or Release Me
- Favorite song from (m)orning EP- The Fisherman Song, Night/Day
- Favorite song from (a)fternoon EP- Communication
- Favorite song from (e)vening EP- Seasons
- Favorite Youtube video of the band- Dave playing Just Let Go acoustic. Couldn’t have tabbed/learned that song without it, but it’s easier now.
- Favorite acoustic/live version of a song- Probably when I saw them in Chicago and they played Breakdown and Sean and I seemed to be the only two people in the room who sang the last “here comes the breakdown”.
- Post whatever Mae-related thing you want to post- my website with Mae tabs! (http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~rarsenau/tabs/artists/mae/mae_home.html)
- First song you have heard of Mae (or earliest memory of them)- My friend Ian made me listen to the beginning of the everglow in his car. I was blown away by the piano.
- Pick a Mae song you think should have a music video made, and if possible, what would the video look like?- I think music videos are useless unless they’re live (concerts). So I’d like to see more of their songs professionally recorded live.
- A Mae song that reminds you of someone or something- literally all of them
- A Mae song you think is underrated- Communication! Best songwriting they’ve ever done.
- Your ideal Mae setlist/playlist- yikes, here we go. Boomerang, Suspension, Bloom, This is the Countdown, Night/Day—> Summertime, Just Let Go, I Just Wanted You to Know, All Deliberate Speed, Giving it Away, Ready and Waiting to Fall, Anything, (Break), We’re So Far Away—> The Fisherman Song, The Ocean, Communication, The Everglow, The Sun and the Moon. They’d be tired after that show!
- If Mae would tour to your town with two other bands, which bands would you like to see with them and why?- oh jeeze. The Starting Line and Jamie Cullum. There would be so much musical greatness exploding all over the stage.
- If Mae would cover a song, what would you want them to sing?- Their style is so unique… I don’t know that I could pick anything and know it would sound great, so I’ll pick nothing. Write new music instead!
- Favorite Mae apparel you have bought or are dying to buy- My sweatshirt from their last tour.
- Have you seen Mae live? If yes, tell us about it. If not, why?- Saw them in Chicago. They got cut short and I didn’t look around to find Dave’s acoustic performance after the show, but it was the most emotional concert I’ve ever experienced in my life.
- Other bands you discovered because of Mae- none because of them. I guess they eased me into Coldplay indirectly though.
- How did Mae change your life?- there’s no way to answer this question. not because they haven’t (they have), but because they did it in an indescribable way.
- If you could tell the band anything, what would it be?- It’s rough and unfortunate that you decided to no longer be together, but it was a necessary decision. I guess I’d say that I don’t need you to tour to enjoy your music. You all have easy access to recording equipment, why not write songs over skype! Then record it on your own stuff and pass it around. I’d buy an album that developed like that!
Mostly only did this because Joe sent it to me and I’m bored too.
1. Favorite Song: Probably either The Fisherman Song or In Pieces. Though I’m partial to Summertime and Goodbye, Goodnight as well.
2. Favorite album/EP: The Everglow, though I’ll take (M)orning, (A)fternoon, and (E)vening as a straight run-through over it.
3. I don’t really listen to lyrics (weird, I know), but if I had to pick, I would probably go with “ It is so clear to me that this was meant to be. Do you remember watching fireworks? As we looked into the sky, I made my plans. I did my best to put my love in words, when I knelt down at your feet and took your hands.”
4. Favorite photo: Definitely the picture from the Everglow Vinyl (and I think it’s in the CD jacket too) of Everglow dude on the whale. I just think it’s a really cool picture, and I love the art style.
5. Favorite photo/video of them in a concert: The DVD of the farewell concert on the (e)vening tour.
6. Favorite music video: Never really seen an actual “music video” so I don’t really know how to answer this.
7. Favorite band member: Probably Rob (even though I’m a guitar guy, his piano parts fit so well), though obviously Dave is a really integral part. It’s close.
8. Favorite quote a band member said: Couldn’t tell you.
9. Favorite solo photo of any band member: Uhhh?
10. Favorite song from Destination: Beautiful: Summertime
11. Favorite song from The Everglow: The Sun and The Moon
12. Favorite song from Singularity: Just Let Go
13. Favorite song from (m)orning EP: The Fisherman Song
14. Favorite song from (a)fternoon EP: In Pieces
15. Favorite song from (e)vening EP: I Just Needed You To Know
16. Favorite YouTube video of the band: There aren’t many out there, and the ones taht are are in pretty shitty quality, so I don’t really know/have one.
17. Favorite acoustic/live version of a song: I hate that I didn’t go to the show in Chicago with Joe and Sean. I’d have to say the live version of This Time is the Last Time on Destination: B-Sides. The interlude is awesome.
18. Post whatever Mae-related thing you want to post:
19. First song you heard of Mae (or earliest memory of them): I actually think The Fisherman Song was the first song I heard of them, though I remember hearing Sean play Boomerang a lot on his laptop. Some sort of mix of the two. What’s funny is I had Mae on my laptop for a REALLY long time and never listened until Joe and Sean told me I needed to listen to The Everglow (Joe used to give me shit for not listening to it straight through all the time).
20. Pick a Mae song you think should have a music video made, and if possible, what would the video look like? : I would LOVE to see some sort of extended mini-video that accompanied The Everglow (using the art style of the CD and Vinyl jacket, of course). That would be phenomenal.
21. A Mae song that reminds of you of someone or something: The Fisherman Song reminds me of the times that Joe Sean and I used to play our acoustic version of it. I really enjoyed when we would do that, and wish we would have done open mic night with it.
22. A Mae song you think is underrated: This is tough. Tisbury Lane or Over & Over are what I would have to go with, I suppose.
23. Your ideal Mae setlist/playlist: (m)(a)(e) straight through. With The Everglow OR Destination: Beautiful as an encore. It would be a long show, but incredible.
24. If Mae were to tour to your town with two other bands, which would you like to see them with and why?: John Mayer (especially if it could be like his old shows) and Coldplay. That concert would be all over the place, but would be awesome.
25. If Mae would cover a song, what would you want them to sing?: Any song from any band that broke up and got back together. Maybe THAT would inspire them to do the same.
26. Favorite Mae apparel you have bought or are dying to buy: Unfortunately, I haven’t bought any. I really like the zip-up that Joe has but probably wouldn’t buy it since he already has it. I think it would be cool to have an original copy of all of their album/EP releases.
27. Have you ever seen Mae live?: No. And it is one of the single biggest regrets I have in college, since I could have gone to see them in Chicago with Joe and Sean. To this day, it really pisses me off that I didn’t go.
28. Other bands you discovered because of Mae: Honestly I don’t think any. Mae was a good enough discovery for me.
29. How did Mae change your life?: Sounds kind of silly, I suppose, but Mae kind of rejuvenated my guitar playing. I guess I have Joe to thank for that too, since he did the tabbing, but I was starting to really get sick of guitar until I figured out how to play some of their stuff. Also, Mae makes my drives to Lafayette and back much more tolerable. Even more importantly, I probably would have had a panic attack on the plane to Boston had I not been listening to (m)(a)(e) (per Joe’s suggestion).
30. If you could tell the band anything, what would it be? : PLEASE, for the love of god and music, GET BACK TOGETHER and write more music!!

Day One | Favorite Song
Night/Day
When it comes to Mae songs, there’s always going to be transcendental subtext that allows everyone to connect to any given song. That much is true, but I think this song can take the title as my favorite because it has another layer to it that allows the stand alone meaning as well as the subtext to affect the listener. How many mornings have we slept in? How many times have we vowed to change? But if we dig deeper, what will we do to change or even do we need to change?
14. favorite song from (a)fternoon: communication
let our walls crumble and burn away!
HAD TO CUT THIS ONE SO BAD, I’M SO SORRY GHDAKJHFKJDA
also omg it has been forever since i updated this holy shit
YEAH SO I LOVE THIS SONG A LOT;; it seems like it would be so much fun to perform on a stage. with the lalalalas and stuff~ aaagh it just feels like summertime to me, it reminds me of going to the park when the weather is perfect in the early evening and just everything being amazing.
also, perfect (m)orning references.
AAH. I want to see them perform this song live.

15. favorite song from (e)vening: my favorite dream
you are the cool wind that frees my bones,
and i’m so reckless when you call to me.
this is probably my favorite mae song of all time (other than anything, i never count anything in any of those “favorite mae song” things because it’s such a default answer lololol)
good lord it is so beautiful. like oh my god. i remember how hard it was for me to get into (e)vening because i didn’t want to listen to it because i thought it would feel like the end for mae. BUT THIS SONG IS SO AMAZING AND PERFECT. i want to sing it for my senior solo (if it weren’t for those pesky overlapping parts at the end. they’re my favorite part of the song but they would be impossible to do live).
dave’s gorgeous tenor voice gdahjfkda he can slip into these notes so flawlessly and i hate evertythingfsgjflkgfs; ; it’s too BEAUTIFUL the acousticness of this. it feels magical and just ghdajkfda this is how i always get about my favorite mae songs okay i just become a keysmashing mess
also (m)orning references okay i just love how every single mae song ties into all the other mae songs

13. favorite song from (m)orning: the house that fire built
soak the ground with gasoline, drop the match and let the blaze infect us all.
i had to cut off the end because it was too big for tumblr ;; dAmN you and your long songs mae
but yes uhmn. this. i can kind of relate every single mae song to soccer, because i guess i’m that asshole. just aaaghjkaghj this song. it’s just an…uprising song. it just makes me feel good. in fact, the tag i use on my blog to post things that keep me out of depression is the house that fire built.
^that lyric up there, ohhh man just the entirety of it kills me. it’s so pretty. it’s fun to sing and say and think about and listen to, the way they edited it into the song is so beautiful.
and i always die at everglow references in non-everglow songs!!!!

12. favorite song from singularity: novocaine
it’s not so typical, so hypocritical for me to act this way,
but novocaine sets in and i pretend the real is fake.
see the master strike up his band to play…
the music screams in me but i don’t hear a single thing.
the bonus track that nobody’s ever heard!!!!!
ugh i love this song so muuuuuch. it was hell deciding a verse to put up there ahah. i love every lyric in this song, every note, every just movement oh it’s so beautiful. this song is just industrial. HOW STEAMPUNK IS THIS SONG.
it’s not even regular mae, like it feels too rock-and-rolly and rough and like…pessimistic? haha i usually don’t categorize mae as particularly optimistic music, but the entirety of singularity was kind of…dark. it had darker tones than all of the other albums. maybe that’s the reason why this is forever one of my favorite mae albums, it’s just different, it’s darker and angrier.
the overlapping at the end ghdkjfda~*~* i need to know who the voices in this song are, because they can’t be all dave. can dave even get that low? /tenorswag
just…yes;; i wish i could do posts about brink of disaster and just let go and release me too. xD

11. favorite song from the everglow: painless
hey! wait! knock me down and i’ll get up again.
oh! pain! a memory that can erase your sting;
i’ll keep holding, and i’ll keep trying,
i feel this fight, it is slowly dying now but i feel painless…
[it means besides anything right—]
my soccer song!!! i would listen to this and anything before every practice/game. it just…makes me feel invincible.
i had this thing where…god i was a little tasmanian devil on the field. ‘cause the older you get, the more they allow in the physicality of the sport ahaha. maybe it was an assertion of my transliness or just my style or whatever, but when i was going for that goal not a single muthafucka gon’ stop me. the amount of injuries i got from this playing style was tremendous. but i always had this little “hey! wait! knock me down and i’ll get up again!” going off in my head.
invincibility, is what this song gave me. i feel like every mae song has given me something.
